Evidence-Based Management Masterclass

The first of a series of Masterclasses organised by the Research School of Management kicked off on Tuesday 7th of June with a 6-hour session in Evidence-based management (EBMgt) held at the Allan Barton Forum of the ANU College of Business and Economics. The Masterclass was facilitated by world renowned experts Professor Rob Briner and Dr. Eric Barends. There were 25 participants from various private, public and not-for-profit organisations.

This first session opened up with a speech by Dr Alessandra Capezio who is spear-heading the integration of Evidence Based Practice into RSM’s curriculum development. Dr. Capezio welcomed the participants by emphasizing the value of Evidence-based Practice principles for organisations in the public, private, and higher education sectors. She stressed the likelihood of favorable outcomes for business and organisations that adopt Evidence Based Practice as it supports and enables the critical appraisal of all inputs and information to decision-making.  She suggested that evidence-based practice, decision and policy making in the public sector can address the increasing standard of scrutiny within the administrative law framework and should help meet and exceed requirements of internal review processes. As for the private sector, EBM would help mitigate the associated risks of failed projects, and further provide enhanced accountability to the market.

Professor Briner and Dr. Barends covered various EBM topics starting with its origins and definitions to then illustrate and discuss with participants the benefits in the application of EBMgt for decision making. The Masterclass was interspersed with lots of discussions around the challenges and barriers to the implementation of EBMgt. Much attention was also given to the theoretical basis in the practical stride of EBMgt.

Feedback from participants suggested that the Masterclass was extremely valuable and that they thoroughly enjoyed Professor Briner and Dr Barends highly interactive and dynamic style of delivery. When asked about how valuable the masterclass had been both professionally and personally one participant responded “coming from a STEM background it is useful as it helps to translate my language into business language”. When asked to comment on the content and subject matter of the Masterclass, one participant said it was “extensive but highly accessible”.  In some final comments about the Masterclass one participant said “I'm looking forward to applying EBM and furthering my experience in this field”.

Professor Byron Keating closed the Masterclass session by reminding the close links ANU maintains with Australian society through its excellent quality research impacts and excellent graduates whose knowledge, skills and capabilities are well sought after. He announced the RSM is incorporating EBP within its education and research frameworks for curriculum development, a move he sees to be in line and in support of ANU's research excellence and of its close and engaging relationships with society at large.
